Cellular Jail

In the era of the British Government, the Cellular Jail was known as Kala Pani. It was constructed between 1896 and 1906. It was used by them to prison political leaders who raised voice against British rules. As the Andaman and Nicobar is a remote archipelago, they decided to construct prisons in building in the same place. They choose that Island because it was almost impossible to get back from Island without any help from Britishers. Chain gangs were involved as labors to construct prisons. The locks of the prisons were specially designed in such a way that it was out of prisoners’ reach, it was difficult even to touch the latches of the lock.

Ross-Island

Ross Island

Ross Island which is later known as Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Island which was established in the year 1789. Also, a hospital and a sanatorium were established between 1989-1992. In 1858, Penal Settlement took place, which was shifted from Singapore to Port Blair. During British Rule, the Ross Island was approximately 200 acres, but as of now, it is hardly even 80 acres. Japanese Chief Commissioner took over the Island in March 1941. Later the house of government become a residence for the Japanese Colonel for the next three years from March 1942to October 1945. During that period Colonel of the Japanese helped Subhas Chandra Bose to fight against Britishers. Meanwhile, they also built a watchpoint for the Island. For safety and to avoid any assault on Ross Island. In 1945, the Britishers surrendered and then from April 1979 Indian Navy oversees the Island. They named their post-INS Jarawa after some tribes of the Andaman group of Islands.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi renamed the Island, from Ross Island to Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Island on 30th December 2018.

Radhanagar Beach

Radhanagar Beach was lavished with the title of Best Beach in Asia in 2004 by The Times magazine. When Britishers took over the country in the 18th century, John Ritchie was on a tour of the eastern coast, India. As, he was a marine officer, and the tour was for exploring the eastern coast. In honour of this initiative, British Marine Officer named the east Andaman Island Ritchie’s Archipelago. Also, Radhanagar Beach lies in the same eastern coast area and therefore in Archipelago as well.

Barren Island

It is famous for its active volcano, which was first observed in back 1787. Since then, the volcano erupted almost 10 to 15 times, but the most harmful volcano was in 1991 eruption comparatively. It was affecting the flora and fauna of the Island. The Island is said to be full of a variety of species of birds and insects especially with 51 species of the same.

Later, it was spotted that the volcano outbreak only lasts for 5 mins to 10 mins after sunset, by the National Institute of Oceanography. The volcano is probably located on a 106 million old coastal crust with a volcano from 1.6 million years.

Elephant Beach

Elephant Beach is the only Beach with elephants. In ancient times, when transport facilities were less, elephants were used as the median of transportation to reach at Beach. Since then, the beach was popularly known as Elephant Beach. Lately, they also launched water sports which includes elephants as well. Elephants also do the swim on the Island and get fully merged in the water.

Mount Harriet National Park

Mount Harriet was established in 1969. The Park is named in honour of Harriet C. Tytler the 2nd wife of Robert Christopher Tytler, superintendent of the convict settlement and an army officer. This park’s picture is also printed on the backside of ₹20 notes. From April 1862 to Feb 1864 Harriet dedicated her hard work to keep a record of the monuments in Delhi at the time of the revolt of 1857 in India.

Shaheed Dweep

It was unoccupied till the late 1960s, later, the Island was occupied by East Pakistanis and Bangladeshis before the 1971 Independence War. Shaheed Dweep was prior known as Neil Island until 30 December 2018, it’s when Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared the change of several places. Since then, it is renamed and popularly known as Shaheed Dweep in honour of freedom fighters.

Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park

On 24 May 1983, this park was created. To preserve it as a Forest Chief Wildlife Warden of the forest department of Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Basically, to preserve and protect marine life. This Park is preserved under The Wildlife Protection Act of 1972 and belongs to the South Andaman Administrative district of The Indian Union Territory.
